Benefits of Coconut Oil:

What is Crepey Skin?

Our skin contains proteins, found in the dermis, responsible for maintaining the elasticity and firmness of the skin. Over time, these proteins start breaking and the result is wrinkly skin that has no elasticity. This can be due to environmental factors, aging, or an underlying skin condition. Crepey skin resembles a crepe paper, hence the name. It gives the skin a ripple effect and the skin starts developing stretches. It is not restricted to the skin of any specific area and can happen all over your body from the face to the legs to the hands.

Crepey skin can look thin and you will see your veins start becoming more visible. One of the most common factors that cause crepey skin is sun exposure. Some external factors that can cause crepey skin involve smoking and significant weight loss. The smoke from cigarettes can break down the proteins that maintain healthy and firm skin and the sudden significant weight loss can cause sagging. Another factor that can cause crepey skin is genetics.

Coconut Oil for Crepey Skin:

Coconut oil is one of the most moisturizing ingredients found in nature. Due to the presence of saturated fatty acids, coconut oil has emollient properties that help it act as a moisturizer. Emollients are a type of fat that work by filling in the gaps and cracks between the dry epidermis of the skin making it smoother and ultimately, softer than before.

Coconut oil works efficiently in repairing crepey skin and restoring the required moisture in the skin to make it appear supple and smooth. Since coconut oil also contains vitamin E, it also improves overall skin health. Coconut oil also has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties which makes it one of the best options for treating crepey skin.

How to Use Coconut Oil for Crepey Skin:

Although coconut oil can be applied directly to the skin, mixing it with other powerful ingredients will provide more benefits. Here are some DIY skin masks and toners that you can make by mixing coconut oil with ingredients available in our households:

  1. Coconut Oil and Honey:

The humectants found in honey along with its anti-inflammatory properties make it perfect for treating skin issues as it prevents sagging and wrinkles. Take 2 tablespoons of honey and mix 1 tablespoon of coconut oil in it. Apply the mask to your face and massage it for 2 minutes in the upward direction. Leave it on for 20 minutes and wash off with lukewarm water.

  1. Coconut oil and Aloe Vera:

The combination works great as the coconut oil contains Vitamin E and the aloe vera is rich in malic acid. Both of these ingredients prevent sagging and wrinkles and promote healthy and flawless skin. Mix together 2 tablespoons of coconut oil along with 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel. Apply on the face using a brush and leave it to dry. Wash the mask with cold water after it has dried completely. You can use aloe vera gel available on the market or extract it directly from the plant.

  1. Coconut Oil and Shea Butter:

Both of these ingredients contain fatty acids that help in uplifting the skin and keeping it hydrated. Shea butter works by forming a protective barrier around the skin that prevents it from showing the common signs of aging and coconut oil keeps the skin supple. Take 1 tablespoon of solid shea butter and melt it in a pan. Add half a tablespoon of coconut oil to the pan and mix it before turning off the flame. Massage the mixture on your face when it has cooled down a bit and leave it overnight. Wash your face in the morning with cold water.

Mix 1/4th of a teaspoon of turmeric with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and apply it to your face. Leave the mixture on for a few minutes before washing it off with lukewarm water.

Make sure to use these masks regularly for getting the desired results faster. There are also many drugstore products available that contain coconut oil and are perfect for treating crepey skin. Other products like retinoids, AHAs, and BHAs might even work better than coconut oil when it comes to treating crepey skin. You can prevent crepey skin by using a good amount of sunscreen every time you step out in the sun, eating healthy food, drinking lots of water, and avoiding smoking. Make sure you always wear sunglasses and hats when going out in the sun for a long period. Use a good moisturizer every day to keep your skin hydrated and fresh.
